Rococo "Whole Cluster" Grenache/Mourvedre, Paso Robles, 2017
What a stunning debut red wine for food scientist-turned winemaker Natalie Brown. This wine is expertly crafted, using native yeast and no fining or filtering. Half of the Mourvedre was destemmed, while the other half joined the Grenache as a whole cluster fermentation. The beautiful nose on this garnet-gem colored juice is quintessentially Grenache, with strawberry fruit leather, baking spices, tobacco, anise, a hint of lilac and the smoke typical of Mourvèdre. The mouthfeel is striking; lush and full and palate-coating in the best way imaginable, almost like the feel of velvety dark cocoa with flavors of blackberry, plum and earth. Pair this brooding-yet-delightful gem with stewed and braised meats, mushroom pot pie, grilled veggies with Romesco sauce and a box of chocolate truffle hearts.
